Teaching Good Things - Practical Skills for Real Life

The Importance of Routine and Rote

I love making schedules, but I fail miserably at keeping them. Then I learned that what I really needed was a routine, not a schedule.

I do have a list of things that need to be completed each day/week but because we are a family that lives and works together we NEED to be flexible. Situations happen, bad moods happen, beautiful weather happens and opportunities happen.

I do believe a daily routine leads to a pattern for life.

In the mornings we do breakfast, chores and then Bible, memorization, character traits and sing together. If something interrupts our morning routine we can do it in the evening… it still gets done. If we miss a day, or two, IT.IS.NOT the end of the world, we just pick up where we left off. When we become so rigid in our schedules and to-do list we miss out on the beauty of life, relationships and outreach opportunities.

Now I do believe we need structure and routine. We need goals and a plan. We mission statements and direction. Otherwise we will become a house divided and accomplish nothing and be swept away with each gust of wind that comes along.

Routine: a regular way of doing things in a particular order

Rote: mechanical or unthinking routine or repetition

Do not underestimate the power of routine and rote. If you will be consistent three to five days a week to read, discuss and drill verses and traits, for the purpose of training and memory, you will be amazed at what your children will memorize. Our three year old was able to recite Proverbs 3 more readily than our seven and eight year olds.

Remember you want to instill good habits in your children. Just as brushing their teeth is very important to healthy teeth, so are the self-disciplines of good character in thought, word and deed!

A part of our daily routine:

The Scriptures, creeds, character traits and quotes I use for our daily routine I also use for the childrens’ copywork and memory work. Which in turn helps them to write truth on the tablet of their hearts and mine too!
