Baby Jude (our newest grand-baby) will be here in about 4 weeks and we can’t wait. We are busy sewing and crocheting gifts for him.
Cherish (11), made her new nephew a quilt. This was her first time to use a rotary cutter and quilting rulers. She also got a LOT of practice using the seam ripper.
The quilt was much more difficult than her first one a couple years ago.
She machine appliqued Jude’s name on, and then machine quilted it. She did a great job.
One of the first things Cherish told me when she came to live with us was that she was not “crafty”. While I’ll agree that it does not come naturally for her, she has a great attitude about learning and is at least trying!
Sewing is a skill that anyone can learn. Designing patterns or finding new techniques is a gift of creativity. Let’s not confuse the two.
Sewing well is a skill to be developed. Sewing for enjoyment is a perspective, let’s not confuse these two.
Anyone CAN sew, IF they are taught.

Have you read the “In Grandma’s Attic” series of books? I love them and highly recommend them as a family read aloud if you haven’t read them yet. One of the stories Grandma tells is a time when she was sewing a project for a contest and made a mistake and didn’t want to go back and fix it. I won’t ruin how the story ends, but now I think of it every time I get out my seam ripper.

We’ll have to check that out!

Lovely, Cherish! Let me share a little secret with you. I am a mom of nine children, all adults. Everyone knows I love to sew. I have a beautiful sewing room and it is where I am happiest … but … I am not creative. I love to sew using patterns and other peoples ideas but I am not creative myself. I also make beautiful dresses and quilts and everyone thinks I am creative but I have just learned to sew very well. I never wish I was creative … I would much rather be a good seamstress. It is very easy to get patterns but quite difficult to truly sew well. Most people do not know the difference, but your Mom does!
