Teaching Good Things - Practical Skills for Real Life

11 Year Old Creates an Income with Her Handiwork!

This is a great interview with a very talented 11 year old! Because handiwork is one of my passions in life I could easily make this a VERY LONG post!!! But I will refrain for the time being and let you meet Brianna, a girl that is using her youth in a way that is productive and purposeful!! My comments are in blue.

Your name and age:

Brianna and I am 11.

Do you have a name for your business?

Brianna’s Creative Crochet

What products or service do you offer?

I crochet doilies and other items like dishcloths.

Why did you choose this?

I started crocheting when I was 8 and I loved it. I did not start out to make money crocheting. I really enjoy doing it and I gave some things away.  As people saw my work they asked for specific items and sizes.  So, I started taking orders for items.  The more people that saw my work, the more orders I received. My business just slowly grew.

Tell us a little about your family life growing up.

I live in Oklahoma and I have 1 sister and 1 brother.

Did your parents encourage you in this pursuit?

Yes

If so, how?

They said I did a good job and encouraged me to continue. They also bought my supplies and anything else I needed to keep crocheting.

What type of school do you attend, or did attend?

I am homeschooled.

Did you take any extra classes/lessons to help you pursue your interest?

An older lady in our church taught me how to crochet.  She continues to help me if I need it. I love this!

This is what the older ladies are suppose to be doing, teaching the younger ladies to love things just like crochet!

Do you feel like people don’t take you very seriously because of your age?

My age helps me because people are always surprised that someone so young loves to crochet so much and is so good at it.

Great point! And most girls your age are busy doing nothing but wasting time in front of the TV, on the phone or simply tuned out! It is wonderful that you are doing this at such a young age!

What do you find most challenging about what you do?

I don’t like ripping out my work when I make a mistake. I know I have to in order to get a good product, but I don’t like it.

Oh, I feel your pain! I hate that too, but it comes with the territory!

What do you find most rewarding about what you do?

I am happy when people are happy with what I have made for them.

I agree! There is a level of satisfaction that you cannot get anywhere else when you know you’ve created something that someone else appreciates.

What character traits do you feel have really been built in you since starting your business?

Patience and diligence.

Who do you go to when you need advice?

I go to my teacher when I need crochet advice because my mom does not crochet.

What are your financial expectations?

I want to crochet mainly for fun and a little extra money.  I think in the future, it will be a good to always have something I can give as a gift.

Excellent point! If nothing else being able to crochet, knit or quilt is a wonderful skill  to have because you will always be able to give unique gifts from your own hands and heart!

Do you plan on expanding your business? If so, how?

I crochet as I have time, so I am not sure how big my business can become.

Do you plan on doing this long term?

Yes, I think I will always love to crochet.

A handiwork skill you love will be with you all the days of your life!

Do you have any advice for young people that are considering starting their own business?

Find something that interests you and that you are good at and see if you can make money doing it.

Do you have a physical place of business or a website that people can go to see what you have to offer?

I have a blog where I write about the things I am making. It is called “BriannasCreativeCrochet.com”

~~~~~~
I’m very proud of you Brianna! You are a shining example of a virtrous woman that works willingly with her hands!
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
Proverbs 31:13
Some of you may think that crocheting doilies looks very difficult, but it is the same as crocheting with yarn, except that you are using thread. I enjoy working with thread more than I do yarn. I make name doilies which make great wedding gifts or gifts for someone who has everything!
