Anyone that has washed clothes more than once has probably figured out that it is important to sort the dirty clothes before washing them. Not only sort the colors, but sometimes you have to sort special fabrics.
For example, towels should always be washed separate. Have you ever pulled a t-shirt out of the washer that was washed with a towel? It leaves your t-shirt all fuzzy looking.
If you do not sort your colors, especially new items, your white socks will eventually be pink.
Sorting clothes will prolong the life of colors and fabrics.
I love this little clip!
Even the young guys can learn how to do laundry correctly
and with a GREAT attitude!
Insist that your children be part of the laundry process. Teach them as soon as possible to take good care of their clothing. They can even pre-treat their stains before they toss their shirt in the hamper…in the correct color bin! ;o) This is a wonderful way to encourage Responsibility!
Sorting Tips
Always read your labels.
Pre-treat stains the night before if you can. All of the name brand stain removers work good and worth the money, especially if it saves your favorite shirt! I use Dawn for any grease based stains.
Turn clothes right side out, unless it has an iron-on or screen-print. Then you will want to turn those inside-out to help prevent pealing.
ALWAYS empty all pockets! Nothing worse than a crayon, pen or lipstick going through the whole wash and almost always the dry cycles.
Delicate fabrics should be hand washed.
Look for mending to be done. Usually it is better to mend a tear before it is washed.

Thanks for this post. I have had laundry on the brain lately and have thought it was high time to put a 3-bin hamper in the childrens’ bathroom and have them begin sorting and turning right-side out their own laundry. I still do all the washing, but it would cut out a lot of my time standing at the washer turning clothes and sorting. Thanks for the movtivation!

Another tip for laundry came to me recently out of sheer desperation! (We have 10 children and produce lots of laundry!)
I have labeled different hampers with towels and washcloths, pants and jeans, shirts, and one for dresses. Its amazing how much time this saves. Think of it-a basket of towels takes maybe 2 minutes to fold-same with jeans. But a basket of mixed clothes with socks and underwear, shirts etc. takes forever to get sorted and matched. This way we speed up our folding process, which is my biggest challenge anyway. Its easy to wash them!! The washer does that. The hard part is folding and putting them away.
