Brunch Ideas

If you have been a reader of this blog for any amount of time you know I’m all about family and community. I love gathering people around my table and practicing hospitality.

I find it interesting that there was a table with food and drink in the temple. That one of the sacraments of the Church is around a communion table. Jesus often used the gathering around food to teach and satisfy. One of the last times He spoke intimately with his disciples was around a table.

Pepper Jelly Recipe for Canning

This is wonderful poured over a block of cream cheese and served with crackers for parties. I’ve also used it over a roast in the crockpot.

Warning: Although this is a jelly, it is not thick like most jellies. You need to follow the instructions carefully.

  • 3/4 lb to 1 pound of peppers
  • 6 cups sugar
  • 2 cups of 5% apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 3 packets of dry pectin (using the no-sugar pectin gives the best results).

Detailed explanation of how to make this with pictures Go Here.

Chocolate Banana Bread Recipe

We came across a real good deal on ripe bananas and decided it was time to make some banana bread for the freezer. This recipe is so good! I love having several loaves in the freezer to pull out for company or even to take for someone who is struggling or for a hostess gift. I wrap mine individually and then place in a freezer ziplock.

This is a great recipe for beginners. I showed Cherish (10) how to make the first batch and she made the remaining 3 batches without me.

Pineapple Cucumber Salsa

We have an abundance of cucumbers from our garden right now. I made this recipe for the first time today. It.Was.So.Good! I didn’t have any jalapenos on hand so it didn’t have that kick to it, but it was delish nonetheless!

For supper I topped my hamburger with it. Again, it was so good!

Chop, combine, cover and refrigerate until serving.

ALWAYS use gloves when working with the peppers… and NEVER touch your face!

How to Make Paula Dean’s Cheese Straws

Cheese straws are definitely a southern thing!

I made these a few weeks ago for a wedding reception. They are really easy and MUCH cheaper if you make them yourself rather than buying them pre-made.

And when you want southern food it is best to learn from a southerner. I love Paula Deans recipes.

Cheese Straws

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

You can read how to make these simple treats and even watch Paula’s video clip here.
