Easter 2015 - Because My Family is Worth It

This year between being so slammed with bakery orders and the new addition to the family it was hard to keep our usual Resurrection Day/weekend routine, so we just learn to be flexible and do what we can.

I love, absolutely love tablescapes.

Our table isn’t always pretty, but on special occasions I like to go the extra mile. Some people may say it’s not worth the extra work but I beg a difference.

Make Ahead Brunch Ideas

Brunch Ideas

If you have been a reader of this blog for any amount of time you know I’m all about family and community. I love gathering people around my table and practicing hospitality.

I find it interesting that there was a table with food and drink in the temple. That one of the sacraments of the Church is around a communion table. Jesus often used the gathering around food to teach and satisfy. One of the last times He spoke intimately with his disciples was around a table.

Thanksgiving Tablescapes

I love a beautiful table. It says to your guest, “I have been preparing for YOU, YOU are important, YOU are wanted.”

I think about how Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us, we will also sit and dine at His feast. Can you imagine???

I love Pinterest and magazines that show decorating ideas, but especially tablescape ideas. As much as I love them, I know most of them are unrealistic for ordinary people like me. A limited budget, limited time and limited space in our little house really restricts what I can do with my table.

How to Host a Thanksgiving Feast and Unit Study

Purpose: Fellowship, food, education in the form of an opportunity for our kids to research, study and prepare a presentation about the first Thanksgiving (public speaking skills). Their presentation does not have to be long, detailed or polished. This is a good starting point for the younger children, even if they only tell one fact.

2 Weeks Before Feast Day

Each family began their own unit study/research. Each child is asked to dress in character and present something they have learned; it can be a poem, a song, a reenactment, a speech, whatever they want.

A Grandmother’s Tea Party

We’ve had my mother and grandmother visiting with us for the last few months. This week they left to go back home in upstate New York.

But before they left we hosted a little Grandmother’s Tea and invited some friends to bring their grandmother.

I had hoped for a beautiful spring day and have the tea outside, but we were rained out, so Emma graciously offered us her dining-room. I’m grateful for a daughter that is hospitable neighbor too!

How to Make Re-Usable Wooden Place-cards

DSC_0107

These place-cards are great for dinner parties.

Because they are made with chalkboard paint they are re-usable.

Cut a hardwood tree branch at about 1/8 or 1/4 thick with a miter saw.

Make sure they are dry before you paint them.

Sand one side if you want to, but that is not necessary.

Use chalkboard paint (a quart goes a long way) and a small craft brush to paint on two coats, letting each coat dry completely.

pavilion

I love our pavilion!

Having a small house makes hospitality challenging,

but this works good for us!

Table cloths…

fresh flowers from our yard…

yard sale sheets hung to help block the sun…

old quilts on wooden benches…

it works for us.

Quilts I made tossed on wooden swings my husband made…

it’s a refection of who we are…
