Making Jar Labels

Last week we had an abundance of produce to can, in fact so much that I had to part with some of it to the Prittchet Family…I just didn’t have time to get it all done.

Emma and I did get 21 quarts of vegetable soup

and 7 quarts of squash relish.

I used this recipe for the squash relish and multiplied it, but I skipped the thickening part and I did not add turmeric.

We also knocked out 14 quarts and 21 pints of Grandma Brodock’s Sweet Pepper Relish!

I try to can extra to give away at Christmas, as a hostess gift, to add to a basket of goodies or to keep on hand as a thank you gift.

It is easy to make your own labels to give it an added special touch! There are a lot of free downloadable  lables on line, you can just do a search for those. I made mine in Word just using a text box and clip art. If you have Publisher you can just use a business card layout.

I printed mine off on regular paper and used packing tape to seal it down. The key is to make sure your label is smaller than the packing tape. :o) I only add labels to jars that I am going to give away.

Hi, I am just getting ready to can peaches to add to my pickles and relish stash!

I was wondering how you go about canning veggie soup. I would love to do this too as so much lovely stuff is in season at our grocery stores (our garden is very little as we live in CA).

Your vegetable soup looks so pretty. That is going to be good this winter. I am freezing tomatoes today so we can have soup this winter too!

    Mrs. Pear,

I use tomatoes as a base for my soup, add whatever veggies I can. Because I add corn to my soup I process it at 10 pounds for 75 minutes in my pressure cooker.

I also hydrate and cook some dry beans to add protein to the soup.

I do not add meat. Sometimes I will add meat and seasoning when I cook it to eat. I hope to give a tutorial on this if time allows when I make some more next week!

    Blessings,
    Kathy

    Thank you!

Canning is something I am slowly adding to my homemaking repertoire, trying to do a little more each year (our children are 4 and 11 months, so they make sure I don’t overdo). Soup is something I would definitely love to add!

This year in addition to my previous year of relish and pears I added pickles and peaches.

Thank you SO much for the label idea! (I just made my first set in Publisher and they look beautiful - if that’s ok to say so!) Last year was my first year to can and all I did was applesauce and apple pie filling. I made labels by hand and my husband (who loved those hand made labels) just asked me this afternoon if I was going to do that this year. I’ve canned so much that I don’t have time to make them all by hand! I think he’s going to like the ‘business card’ style I created. I appreciate your timely tip!

I love your packing tape-label idea! So often, the smudge proof ink just isn’t. That will save the hassle of lining up labels in the printer!
