A Creative Girl Alters Prom Dress

This is a guest post from a dear friend about how her daughter chose to alter a prom dress that she loved.

Haley tries very hard not to “conform to this world” and finding a formal dress that doesn’t do that is very difficult. We prayed before we left the day of the search and of course the Lord met our prayers above what we expected. The first store we stopped at was not even a store we were going to look for the dress at, however, she came excitedly to me holding up the dress she has on in the picture. The only difference was that it was strapless. It was so beautiful that she had to try it on…it was even more beautiful on.

Since she has such a creative mind, she began to tell me what she thought she could do to make the dress modest. I was a little skeptical, but knew once she set her mind to something, she would do her best to follow through.

On a different day, we decided to go material shopping for sleeves for the dress. We were hoping for a contrasting material. We were disappointed with our first trip, but didn’t throw in the towel because we had one more fabric store to check. On the morning of our next trip, we once again prayed for the right fabric to fix the dress modestly. Still expecting to find a contrasting material we were speechless to walk into the fabric store and find the exact material the dress was made of.

This is a second option on how the sleeves could be worn.

Haley then went to work to design the sleeves for the dress and attach them. I am so proud of not only the work that she did, but also for her heart to represent herself in a modest fashion. The Lord is so faithful to answer our prayers daily.

Fiber Arts Monday - Handmade Dolls

It’s middle of the summer but we have our mind set towards fall as we prepare for our county fair. If you’ve read this blog long you know we are big into our fair! Now with new kiddos in this house we have more hands making things to enter! This week I want to get Cherish on a handmade doll and Hayden on some sort of woodworking project.

Here are some tutorials we’ll be choosing from:

I really like this one!

Wouldn’t these make great, EASY gifts for little girls?

Even a little something for boys!

We’ve made sock dolls before, they are fun and easy!

Here is a great tutorial!

These are super cute sock dolls!

These would be great for little ones during church.

Here is a corn husk doll Olivia made last year.

Here is a video how to make them.

This is a great book about sock dolls.

Fiber Arts Monday - Simple Basics, looking for some ideas

With having little girls in my house again I am looking for ideas to help them learn the basics of sewing and easy projects that will encourage them to keep their hands busy.

Cherish, who is 8, is working on a printed plastic canvas project that we picked up at Hobby Lobby. Just learning the simple basics of how to hold a needle and which direction to stitch in has been a challenge, but plastic canvas , a big plastic needle and yarn are perfect to learn these simple things.

She will work on it for about 10 minutes, get frustrated and then have to put it down. I’m OK with that, I want her to enjoy it. The key right now is mechanics.

But the best part of doing this is that it forces time to be still with us, even when I may not want to. I have to sit with her and help her untangle her knots, or show her AGAIN what direction to go in. It gives me a perfect opportunity to teach her patience and the importance of details and diligence. I am learning just as much as she is, not in the skill of sewing but rather in patience and diligence in my parenting, in nurturing our relationship.

I even started my little Peach on these.

I used Styrofoam trays and poked holes in them.

Then I taped the yarn to the foam to be used as a knot.

We use a single thread so they can be used over and over again…

and un-knoted easily.

She thinks she is making something great! She is learning the same things, just bigger and slower. If she messes up the trays it’s no big deal, I’ll just make more. :) These are also great to keep her busy while we do school work. I even numbered her holes so we count as we go.

Boys like them too, but sometimes they find other things to do with the string!

Here are some other easy beginner projects:

Cloth Napkins

Tea Towels

Hair Scrunchie

Fiber Arts Monday - Double Sided Headbands

Jessica, over at Happy Together, has this GREAT tutorial for double sided head bands. Aren’t they just the cutest? These would be great for any age. They would also be a great item to give as gifts or even sell.

I bought some bright, spring-like colored cotton yarn for more dishcloths. I need to get started on a couple baby gifts soon. :)
