Fiber Art Fun – Our Sweet Girls and Rag Dolls

Cherish and I made a couple of rag dolls.

They were fun and a good beginner project for her.

They were part machine sewn and part hand sewn.

Cherish wanted a black doll, she had fun making the hair.

I made the red headed one for my Sweet Peachy girl!

And this is how we keep Sweet Peach busy!

How about you? Any fiber art fun going on? I’d love to hear about it!

Fiber Arts Monday – Handmade Dolls

It’s middle of the summer but we have our mind set towards fall as we prepare for our county fair. If you’ve read this blog long you know we are big into our fair! Now with new kiddos in this house we have more hands making things to enter! This week I want to get Cherish on a handmade doll and Hayden on some sort of woodworking project.

Here are some tutorials we’ll be choosing from:

I really like this one!

Wouldn’t these make great, EASY gifts for little girls?

Even a little something for boys!

We’ve made sock dolls before, they are fun and easy!

Here is a great tutorial!

These are super cute sock dolls!

These would be great for little ones during church.

Here is a corn husk doll Olivia made last year.

Here is a video how to make them.

This is a great book about sock dolls.

Fiber Arts Monday – Simple Basics, looking for some ideas

With having little girls in my house again I am looking for ideas to help them learn the basics of sewing and easy projects that will encourage them to keep their hands busy.

Cherish, who is 8, is working on a printed plastic canvas project that we picked up at Hobby Lobby.  Just learning the simple basics of how to hold a needle and which direction to stitch in has been a challenge, but plastic canvas , a big plastic needle and yarn are perfect to learn these simple things.

She will work on it for about 10 minutes, get frustrated and then have to put it down. I’m OK with that, I want her to enjoy it. The key right now is mechanics.

But the best part of doing this is that it forces time to be still with us, even when I may not want to.  I have to sit with her and help her untangle her knots, or show her AGAIN what direction to go in. It gives me a perfect opportunity to teach her patience and the importance of details and diligence. I am learning just as much as she is, not in the skill of sewing but rather in patience and diligence in my parenting, in nurturing our relationship.

I even started my little Peach on these.

I used Styrofoam trays and poked holes in them.

Then I taped the yarn to the foam to be used as a knot.

We use a single thread so they can be used over and over again…

and un-knoted easily.

She thinks she is making something great! She is learning the same things, just bigger and slower. If she messes  up the trays it’s no big deal, I’ll just make more. :) These are also great to keep her busy while we do school work. I even numbered her holes so we count as we go.

Boys like them too, but sometimes they find other things to do with the string!

Here are some other easy beginner projects:

Cloth Napkins

Tea Towels

Hair Scrunchie

Fiber Arts Monday – First Sewing Project

I turned Cherish loose on her first quilting project.

OK, she wasn’t ‘loose’, she needed LOTS of guidance.

She made a rag quilt for her doll.

This was her first time to ever be on a sewing machine.

She did good.

Hayden waited patiently for his turn to push that gas peddle…

I am not ready for him yet.

Cherish is going to be such a good mom!

What summer projects do you have going?

Let’s share some inspiration!

Fiber Arts Monday – Nine Patch Doll Quilt

Several years ago I made this Nine Patch quilt for a costumer.

The pictures do not show the true bright colors of this quilt.

This is probably one of my favorite quilts I’ve made.

I had a bunch of extra 9 patch squares left over that I had planned on using in a quilt for me one day, but I still haven’t gotten around to it. So when little Peaches’ birthday came around a couple of weeks ago and we were doing gifts that focused on baby dolls (and being a good mommy), I made her a quick doll quilt, using some of the squares and part of a sheet.

I’d like to make Peaches a matching quilt… someday….

Fiber Arts Monday – Hand Embroidery Pillow

I saw this on Pinterest and fell in love with it!

This is a perfect gift for someone who has everything, maybe even for someone with limited space or someone in a nursing home. The design is simple enough you can draw it out for yourself. Go ahead and be thinking of anniversary and Christmas gifts, Mother’s Day is just a few weeks away!

Check out the hand embroidery video tutorials here.

Fiber Arts Monday – Pillowcase Dress

Peaches turns 3 today! I use to make my girl’s birthday and Easter dresses, and now that they are grown (17 and 21) they are not too crazy about that idea anymore! ;) So it’s fun to have little girls to dress up again, my problem is TIME. Yes, time was an issue when my children small too, but I use to be able to stay up all night hand embroidering a dress, or finishing up a hem so it would be ready for Easter morning… I can’t do that anymore. And what is even better is that I figured out that it is not worth the trade off. I need sleep and my family NEEDS me to sleep! They need me to be pleasant and speak kindly.

So for Peaches’ birthday I went with a simple pillowcase dress.

I cut a monkey off another dress I knew she would not be able to wear this winter and stitched it on.

Super easy and fast.
