Wedding on a Budget- DYI Rustic Wedding Invitations

Emma’s wedding is going to have a rustic theme, which really makes it easy for decorating. And because I have this creative-need-to-be-unique-on-a-budget thing in me, I figured I’d make the invitations. So instead of spending a lot of money, I spent a lot of time, but it was a labor of love that I think does reflect her personality.

I bought a roll of brown package paper at WalMart to line the back of the papers to give it a contrast of color, texture and thickness. This was less than $5. The problem was that it curled, so I ironed them flat after I cut a bunch of rectangles that gave me an inch or so of play on each side.

How to Store and Use Pressed Flowers

The best place to store your pressed flowers is in a shoe box. Keep them in a dry place.

Pressed flowers are perfect for framed art work, cards and stationary.

Gently remove your flower from it’s pressing (paper towel/wax paper).

Use a VERY small amount of glue to glue your flower down. A toothpick is a good way to insure a that you don’t use too much glue. Don’t use so much glue that it oozes out, you want just enough to make the flower stick. Glue sticks are good to use. Let the glue/flower dry completely.

How to Press Flowers

Spring is the perfect time to press flowers. Our road sides and lawns are full of tiny wild flowers and the pansies are beautiful this time of year!

I use pressed flowers in my card making and to make framed art work.

The best flowers for pressing are flowers that are thin. Bulky flowers or those with a thick middle like a daisy do not press well.

Flowers that are bright in color will retain their color the best, white flowers will usually turn brown.

A Card Making Day

This week we got together with a couple friends to make cards over where Oliviais staying.

We used card stock cut in half, rubber stamps, pressed flowers, scrapbook paper, ribbon, raffia, and anything else we could gather up.

It was GREAT girl time!!!

I love sending cards, but because they are so expensive I don’t do it as often as I should. Well that and I simply don’t MAKE the time.

Valentines are always fun for kids.

I loved making Valentines with my kids every year and going to a Valentine party to exchange cards and play games.

A Valentine Note

Family Fun has a bunch of great card ideas.

Valentine Cards are Not Just for Kids

~Make a list of people to send a Valentine to telling them what you love most about them. It does not need to be something romantic, just a note of appreciation. When is the last time you sent your grandma a card? How about a neighbor that does not get many visitors? Nursing homes love cards.

The Power of a Pen, Paper and a Stamp!

Don’t we all enjoy getting a letter or card in the mail?!

When I was a child, yes, way before email and text messaging, I had an aunt whose husband was in the military so our relationship was a long distance one. She was so good about writing letters and even sending an occasional handmade card; I was always intrigued with her cards. She made her own cards ‘when card making wasn’t cool’. I also had an elderly aunt, that I rarely saw, for some reason she took up writing with me, she was amazing! She once wrote me a letter all in rhyme, it was beautiful!
