Early Morning Revival Challenge - Book Review

I truly am one of the most inconsistent people I know. I always have great ideas, but struggle with the follow-through to finish them…mainly because another great idea comes along. I have so many un-finished projects its embarrassing.

Sadly, I struggle with the same problem with my Bible reading. I’ll set goals, like reading the Bible in 90 days! I started off strong, and then…. well, maybe a 6 month plan wound be best. :/

I’d like to consider it as the vice-side of my creative (impulsive) personality. But in all honesty, it is mostly a lack of self-discipline.

Being married, having children, homeschooling and a home business has forced me to be more self-disciplined than what comes naturally, but it is still a struggle.

One thing that has taken me a long time to learn is, when I don’t take the time in the mornings to pray and read the Bible, I always feel like I am running behind all day. No matter how many things I mark off my to-do list the day feels ‘un-done’.

For me, and I know we are all different, but if I wait until the evening to read my Bible, my brain is just shot and I feel like I am just going through the motions.

When I do read and pray first thing, hopefully before any kiddos start asking me questions, everything just seems to be at peace, no matter what happens.

When Sharon White, of Legacy of the Home, asked if I would review her latest book, Early Morning Revival Challenge: 90 Day Bible Study, I quickly said yes, thinking this would help me in my morning consistency with reading, and it has!

This study is simple to follow and not at all overwhelming with ‘homework’. Doing the reading plan and combining it with a brief time of journaling I am usually finished in 20 minutes.

I especially love that she encourages journaling. I find that I put way too much on Facebook and not enough on paper in my own writing. I hope my grandchildren will look back on the summer of 2013 and read where I wrote my prayers out for their mom and dad, and for them. In my journaling I also choose a verse or two from my reading that struck a cord with me.

The book also includes a selection of inspiring quotes from 1600′s - 1800′s. These quotes are by Richard Baxter, Thomas Boston, John Wesley, Samuel Rutherford, John Bunyan, and more (one for each day of the challenge).

If you are trying to establish a good habit of morning Bible reading this is a good book for that. And if you fill in the book with dates and your notes it will be a treasure for your grandchildren one day.

One day I left my Bible open and journal out to come back and find where Sweet-Peachy-Girl, who is 4, thought she needed to journal also. This was a great reminder that more is caught than taught. :)

I wish I would have known…

As a writer and speaker I have heard ladies say so many times, “I wish I would have known …(insert regret)… when I was younger.”

Oh, and how often I have said that myself, especially since I was not raised in a Christian home.

I always have this feeling that I am making up for lost time, for things I was never taught as a girl. But mostly I feel like I am swimming upstream as I am working at changing my worldview. Learning new skills are not near as difficult as breaking loose from faulty thinking.

It ALL begins with your worldview.

EVERY choice you make is built on your worldview; what you believe defines purpose and success.

Most of us, Christian or not, grow up and we don’t ask questions.

We go to school and agree with the teachers…

so we can get a good grade…

so we can get into college…

so we can make good money…

so we can be happy and successful.

The truth is, most will graduate with a ton of school debt and 80% will not even work in the field of their degree, meanwhile wondering what will bring them happiness in life.

The other part of that truth is, most will work ordinary jobs, not the glamorous careers hoped for, meanwhile wondering what will bring them happiness in life.

Many are stressed and drugged just to get through the day.

Half will end up divorced, meanwhile wondering what will bring them happiness in life.

Most, even Christians, will have had several sexual partners.

We have traded a Biblical worldview in for the American Dream- believing property, position or even people will bring us happiness. They won’t.

We as parents need to break loose of some of our thinking, because what we have going on now is not working.

We need to empower our daughters with the truth that will encourage a life full of Biblical purpose!

Our daughter, Olivia, has written a book to challenge and encourage girls in how they choose to spend the precious years that are usually considered the college years.

This is NOT an anti-education book. Girls/women need to be educated, but their perspective on education and life purpose is what really matters. How she chooses to use her years before marriage are so VERY important. These are the years to truly seek opportunities that will set the tone for the rest of her life!

I challenge you to set aside any cultural worldview you may have and read this book with an open mind.

How to Build a Family Economy - Lilla Rose

Spending as much time as possible with my three children has always been a top priority for me. From the beginning of our parenting adventures, we have found creative ways to save and earn that still allowed me to forgo traditional full time employment.

We have earned extra money doing various online jobs (including blogging at Raising the Barrs), and I have done some in-home childcare. But by far, the most profitable business endeavor I have undertaken has been selling Lilla Rose hair jewelry.

LillaRose Collage

A couple of years ago, I noticed that many of my favorite bloggers were reviewing Flexi Clips and saying how much they adored them. While they looked interesting enough to enter giveaways for the chance to try one out, I just couldn’t believe they were as amazing as everyone said. I was intrigued by the design (they are made with music wire – like piano strings), and they sure were pretty, but frugal me thought that $14 for a hair clip was kind of ridiculous.

Unfortunately, I didn’t end up winning any of those giveaways, but as my hair grew longer I decided I needed to get my hands on one. Still not wanting to pay full price for a clip, I contacted the Lilla Rose office and asked if there was a consultant near me that might let me host a party to earn free items.

Best.Decision.Ever. Not only did I end up LOVING every item in the Lilla Rose catalog, the Independent Consultant who came out to do my party was an amazing woman who valued many of the same things as me and had absolutely wonderful things to say about the integrity of the company overall.

Long story short, I signed up to be an Independent Consultant with Lilla Rose over a year ago now and it has been such a fun family-friendly way to earn an income! My three and five year old children help me count inventory and have their own “expert” opinions on which styles look best in which hair types. And my baby boy (born on Independence Day 2012!) comes with me to every show and party. I wear him on the front and can still use my hands to demonstrate hairstyles in the back!

We recently moved from Kansas City to Juneau, ALASKA and I had to build up my customer base from scratch again. Lilla Rose hair jewelry really is such a high quality product – that can be used by so many women (with any hair type or length!) - that it almost sells itself. Working at fairs and doing fundraisers in addition to home parties has helped me make some wonderful friends in just a short amount of time. I love that my children see me being productive and social, and I love that the extra money coming in gives me the opportunity to bless others.

I’m excited for the opportunity to bless one of YOU with a free Lilla Rose item of your choice! There really is something for everyone! Browse through the products selection on my website, and be sure to watch these videos on sizing and styling. Then enter to win!

Anjanette, sent me a clip to try out. Like her, I’ve always heard people rave about these but just thought they were ‘another clip’. Oh how wrong I was. I LOVE IT! Olivia LOVES it and we have to draw straws to see who is going to wear it! Guess I need to make an order! ;)

You can enter to win a clip of your own that is valued up to $16

Children are a Blessing DVD - Review

Have you ever wondered what would provoke someone to want to have a bunch of kids?

Have you wondered if there were other families like the Duggars?

And what about birth control? Have you ever searched God’s word about it or thought about the long term impact of it?

Do you believe children are too expensive to raise?

Do you believe you wouldn’t have enough time, energy and patience to raise more than 2 children?

Have you considered what you are leaving for a legacy?

In this video the Moore Family shares their journey as the Lord changed their hearts about the blessing of children. They give us an open and honest look into their family and home.

The Moores explain the history of the birth control movement and present facts to back it up.

What a blessing it is that their children really are best of friends.

I’ve talked openly about our use of birth control in our early years of marriage and then a tubal ligation. The Lord then opened our eyes to truth and softened our hearts toward an open womb. I did have a reversal 10 years ago and one miscarriage about 8 years ago. Oh, how I wish someone would have told us early in life that children are a blessing that we should never reject, it may have saved us SO MUCH heartache!

I respect and admire the Moore Family for putting themselves out there, to be real and honest. May the Lord use this film to educate and encourage others to embrace God’s gift of children!

This 60 minute film includes:

  • The Children’s Perspective - the oldest 5 Moore children share their thoughts on life in a large family and encourage siblings in other families, big or small (18 minutes)
  • A Glance at the Making of Children are a Blessing (6 minutes)
  • Additional Margaret Sanger Quotes and thought-provoking questions to ponder (4 minutes)
  • A Few Funny Things (2 minutes)
  • A Front Porch Discussion - Shane and Edee discuss questions the film may raise (34 minutes)

Stop by their website Moore Family Films, and learn more about their family and their other documentaries! Be sure you sign up for their newsletter.

The Question Behind the Question

The QBQ!!! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a fast read with short chapters that stress the importance of personal accountability. Although the book is focused on personal accountability at work it bleeds into EVERY area of life!

I think this a great book to use at your dinner table or during family time to ignite some great conversation about giving your all, even in the simplest of task. Do you want to equip your children with a great work ethic? This book drives it home! It is an easy to understand, straight to the point book that even children as young as 10-12 could understand but most definitely written for adults that want to make a difference in the world!

Diana’s Cake for her Daughter’s 18th Birthday!

Hi Kathy, I thought I’d post a picture of the cake I just made after having practiced a couple of times with your cake decorating DVD. For the flower’s and words I just used royal frosting and then saved whatever ones looked the best (haha, call me a cheater but I was too new to want to try making the flowers directly on the cake plus figuring out the arrangement while doing it!). This was for my daughter’s 18th bday..the 18 is on the front standing up. I used your whip cream frosting idea that I saw on your site ..it was the lemon cake with strawberries. The inside is a white cake with raspberry filling
