Why We Homeschool

February 13, 2009

As I have shared before in our Learning at Home series,  we started homeschooling due to frustration. God used that to lead us to teach our children at home and teach US (Jeff and me) so much more!!! There are no words to explain the gratitude I have for His mercy towards us and giving us eyes to see.

We now teach our children at home for different reasons. Our children belong to us, they are our responsibility. We don’t even like to use the word ‘school’ because our whole life is school, education is our way of life.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children,

and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house,

and when thou walkest by the way,

and when thou liest down,

and when thou risest up.

Deuteronomy 6:7

When I read this I thought of our recent discussion about the parents being diligent. It seems to me that parenting, teaching, is a constant thing we have to do. And we will teach the same things over and over until it becomes a way of life for our children.

On those days when we are at our wits end, and the yellow school bus that drives by looks like an option, REMEMBER  how patient God is with us. How He teaches the same things to us over and over. You know, those things we know are wrong, but we do them anyway. Paul said, "For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate." God is diligent with us, forgiving us, teaching us and mostly loving us!

The only way I can be diligent to teach my children is to talk with them and walk with them, constantly. Our time with them is so short and I need every day, every hour to teach them and love them. I now have 2 adult children, although they will ask my opinion at times, the majority of my teaching is done. I wish I had more time. ;o)
