What kind of mom will they say you are?
January 17, 2012
My 87 year old grandmother has been here visiting us since November.
She is a very soft spoken, tiny woman, and her mind is still pretty sharp!
I know our time together is getting shorter
and there are moments I want everything to just stand still
and let me savor all I can about her.
During her visit this time I gave her a few pages of questions to answer, I told her it was her homework.
It took her a few days to fill in the answers. There were questions about names and places of her childhood and her life after she was married. I desperately want to document all I can while I can…pictures, words, voice.
One of the questions I asked her was what her mother’s personality was like. As I read her answer I felt such a heavy weight of conviction, she replied, “She was a contented mother.”
OH.MY.GOODNESS!
Now wouldn’t you love for your 87 year old daughter to describe you as “a contented mother”?! Wouldn’t you like to be remembered in your family history as a “contented mother”? Wouldn’t that inspire the girls in your family?
Now, just for the record, my grandma never says anything bad about anyone and I’m sure my great-grandma had her moments, but this is still powerful. My great-grandma and great-grandpa raised 6 kids during the depression. All 6 of them turned out to be honest and kind-hearted people, with a good sense of humor.
I’m thinking being a “contented mother” through hard times does a lot to produce contented kids.
When your children are old and they share stories about you, what will they say?
Personally, I’m hoping that my kids will forget my bad traits and remember how much I loved them. I hope that they will tell their grandchildren that I was a Godly woman that feared the Lord and that I was not too proud to change.
I am grateful to have known my great-grandparents and to be able to share a few stories of my own.

What an awesome thing to be said of you! I would love to be called a contented mother.
The photo is as fabulous as the words! Have that one framed!
Ouch!! I’ve been lacking contentment lately and I’m sure my children notice. I’ve got to snap out of that! OUCH!!!
