I know this is an older post, but it recently gained relevancy from me! We had a deer given to us and I'd never cooked it before!

I made chili with it on Saturday afternoon and didn't mention it to the girls. They ate it up and didn't say one thing about it!

I may try to do a roast sometime this week. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of doing it in the crockpot with onions and canned tomatoes from our garden.

Oh, and BTW, I got a big ol' castiron dutch oven last week! Haven't used it yet. Maybe I'll do the venison roast in it instead of the crockpot.

Blessings--

We do the same too, buying meat whole from the local farmer. I like to support them, even if it is a little more expesnive than the supermarket, because I know exactly how and where it is made, I know I'm not contributing to global warming or something. This meat recipe is good, I found.

We love venison here, too! Last year we had three given to us (my husband actually went out, but didn't get any himself) and I'm hoping for 4-5 this year because we just ate the last of it today.

One of the best ways to use venison chops is to layer them in a crock pot with sliced onions. Make a quick pan gravy kind of on the thick side and pour over the top. Cook on low for 4-6 hours. Serve over biscuits, rice, potatoes, noodles, etc. YUM!

My husband is a big hunter, so that's what we eat instead of beef. One of my favorite ways to fix the steaks is to marinate them in Dale's steak sauce and grill them. Yum! But like you, I just replace beef with it.
