The County Fair and Politics
September 17, 2009
We started attending our county fair when Joshua was just 17 months old, he is now 21. We have not missed one year in 20 years. The last several years we have volunteered in one way or another and entered items.
One of Olivia’s passions is politics. This year she decided to play dumb and ‘quiz’ the candidates/workers at the political booths, both Republican and Democrat. They automatically assume she is uninformed because of her age. As she engaged them in dialog she basically kept asking ‘why’ questions. In this picture she is asking the wife of a man running for office about the Republican platform. This woman is a pro-choice Republican, Olivia is challenging her on the issue of LIFE and when and why is it OK to kill a human. This woman is also a nurse.
I think it is pretty neat that the political parties are there – campaigning, and willing to talk with people. What is sad is that the masses walk by, not letting their voice be heard, in approval or disapproval.
The fair is as fun as you make it!

What a great time! I love that Olivia is challenging the political workers to actually think.
I want to know how the politically questioned responded
Kelly,
I’ll let Olivia answer that one later today, although it is not near as entertaining as watching her wave her arms like crazy as she talks.
Hooray for Olivia! My family mans the Republican booth at our county fair. This year we gave away pocket constitutions from The Heritage Foundation. I wish I had a nickel for each person that refused one by saying,”No thanks, I’m a Democrat.” I would have laughed if it wasn’t so sad. We welcome direct questioning and respectful debate at our booth. I personally had a great conversation with a college kid regarding climate change. I love the fair!
