Thanks Kathy for the video. We moved from Alabama a little over a year ago and I MISS IT SO MUCH! Watching this makes me sad (in good kind of way!) We have so many memories with so many people that were there! Who knows maybe one day we will come back :)

Thanks, Kathy, for answering. I think you have a very balanced view of it all. You can imagine how shocked I was the first time I heard of a church-sponsored barn dance. :) Keep teaching good things!

Kathy,
What fun! I looked at the Southern Heritage dance and would just about give my right arm to be able to come. Unfortunately we live in NC, but might consider a move to AL? My husband has been wanting to move further south for a long time!

Marcia,

We only attend 2-3 dances a year and I understand your concern....completely! I know some families that have to 'sit out' of events like this for a while because they have a child struggling with heart issues. One year we chose not to attend a dance because we had a child (teen) struggling with heart issues and the style of dress was not one we wanted to encourage, so we chose not to go. A lot of it is where you are as a family.

What is so good about this is that it is a family event so kids are less likely to do things that might be done at a more sensual type dance that is only teenagers.

Square dancing is very fast and IF you actually have to touch another man's (or woman's) hand it is for about one second! Because this is a family thing and we are all Christians (and as I said earlier like-minded)and your spouse is there too, adults only dance with their spouse. In square dancing you do not put your arm around anyone but your *partner*. :o)

Is there temptation? I'm sure there is for some, but so can be going to Wal Mart and seeing the same guy in the freezer section each week. ;o)

These are fun dances. The clothing required covers the body well. There are no moves that are vulgar or sensual. And to be honest, the dancers are focusing so much on HOW TO DO the steps you don't notice anything else. lol...

Your concerns are real and rightfully so. I think most of us have the same concerns and keep an eye out for situations that need to be nipped. But we have to teach our children self control and still have a good time! Laughter and fellowship are so important. I spent so many years focusing on the "thou shall nots" that I had lost a lot of my JOY!

Great comment!

Kathy--what a great job you did with the video!!! I had just marveled with several different people about the blessing of having so many wonderful, like-minded friends around. We take it for granted.

I've heard of barn dances, especially among Christian homeschoolers. In the churches I grew up in, dancing was sternly preached against. I'm just wondering about the temptations of unmarried, unrelated couples dancing together and holding hands. Is that a problem at these gatherings?
