Salt as a Weed Killer
July 31, 2010
Salt is a great alternative to chemical weed killers and much less expensive.
This is our front sidewalk.
I poured salt on the weeds. It’s best if it can sit for a day or two without rain.
The dew helps it penetrate slowly. Then the rain will let it get down deep.
Several days letter the weeds are dead.
I usually do this a couple times during the summer.

Now that I think about it, whenever we made homemade ice cream and we would dump the salt/ice water mix after we were finished, it would kill whatever you dumped it on. Thanks for the tip!
One question, how much salt in how large of an area?
Jane,
It really doesn’t take a lot, I just sprinkle it kind of heavy on the thicker areas.
I know that’s not a real clear answer.

Great tip! I didn’t know that.
Make that..do you know HOW it works.
Thanks!
I thought about doing this, but wouldn’t you need to be concerned about it leaching into the ground beside the pathway? I would imagine that eventually it would damage the gardens or grasses beside.
I used borax, which is also natural, on a flat grassy anthill once. It killed the quack grass there, which surprised me, and after three years, there is still no grass growing there, and the area around is not affected. Only now did some new ants appear there. I found that to be quite interesting. Have you ever tried doing this?
