Resourcefulness in the Home
July 13, 2009
The following is a suggestion from Character Journal (I love their stuff!), the comments are mine, not theirs.
How to Demonstrate Resourcefulness in the Home
- Family members cherishing every moment together, however small, in order to build their relationships.
This is probably one of the biggest reasons for the breakdown of the family. Families are no longer spending quantity time together. Families use to work together in the shops or in the fields. They use to spend several hours together in the evenings…WITHOUT A TV, actually talking, reading and singing together. The older your kids get the harder it seems to be able to do this.
As parents we have got to be resourceful in finding ways to make the most of our time. It is actually being together, working and playing together, getting through the tough times and talking through conflicts that builds the relationships.
If everyone is running off to do their own thing the majority of the time it is easy for relationships to breakdown; families to breakdown. How many adults only see their family members on holidays or birthdays?
The term ‘dysfunctional family’ is a common and often expected term used describe the family today. It is no wonder when we take a look at the last 2-3 generations where everyone looks out for number one, as they climb to the top of the ladder, leaving their responsibility of caring for their families (immediate and extended) behind. The children have been taught that it is all about them with a survival of the fittest mentality, rather than the mandate from Jesus to put others first, to honor the parents, to not remove ancient landmarks and to love your neighbor.

Do you want your children to cherish moments together as family? It can’t happen if you are not together as a family!
Find ways to work and play together.
Find service projects together.
Build something together.
Read a book together.
Sing songs together.
Focus on relationships.
Pray together (Nothing binds hearts like prayer)

Good thoughts! This is a big deal to me too.
For father’s day, I bought my husband a carving kit and a book of how to carve fishing lures as a project to do with the boys. I am hoping we will enjoy doing that together.
