Real Food – Heirloom Seeds, video

January 11, 2012

As we plan for our gardens we need to think what we want to grow and what the family will actually eat!

Make a pantry list and keep in mind:

  • what you eat the most of
  • what you can barter with other growers for
  • what you can buy at the farmers market at a better price

For the next couple of weeks we’ll be talking about seeds.

Hybrid Seeds – are produced through cross-pollination, which is the mixing of two different breeds of a plant to create a better fruit (size, look, etc…).  Most harvested hybrid seeds will not continue to produce season after season.

Heirloom Seeds – have been passed on from generation to generation. They are what most traditional and organic growers will choose for seeds.

Other reasons for heirloom seeds:

  • far better for your health
  • provide a greater yield over a longer growing period
  • the produce taste better
  • more adaptable to different soil types
  • greater variety

Ask your neighbors that garden if they know of a place that swaps heirloom seeds, you may be surprised what you come up with.
