Questions About the Window Quilts

Lisa asked:
How did you hang these? I found some great fabric to use and want to give it a try, but I have no idea how you installed them.
Lisa,
I folded over the top and sewed in a sleeve, like what you would have on a curtain. Then I just ran a curtain rod through and hung it (as you would a curtain) a little lower than my valance. I used the gold rope and hung it over the top of the rod. You can hand stitch or use safety pins to get the ropes to stay in place.
I sewed in a sleeve on the bottom to run a doll rod through. This is optional. I just thought it would look better when it was rolled and tied up.
Glenda asked:
I love this idea. I’m a little slow though. If it’s possible, I’d like to get a closer look and understand how they’re put together. Thanks!
Glenda,
It is just 3 layers of fabric, using a heavy muslin in the middle, quilting batting would work good too.
Do these pictures help you any?

Kathy,
Thanks for the explanation as well as the photos! I’m planning to make one of your window quilts for my east-facing guest room so our occasional guests won’t have the early-morning sun waking them at the crack of dawn. The window in that room is quite large, and I figure a homemade window covering will be much less expensive than going out and buying blinds. Thanks, too, for the inspiration.
Blessings, Lisa
Kathy,
I liked this idea when I saw your first post. Our living room windows are south facing and they get a TON of sun in the afternoon. My only concern is that I will lose a lot of light. I like light, especially sunlight streaming through my windows. Do the window quilts eliminate all the light?
Stephanie,
I like light too!!!

I don’t lower my window quilts until afternoon when the sun starts shining in. Mine do show a small amount of light on the edges, but for the most part they block the majority of the light, which does make it pretty dark in the afternoons. But, it is worth the trade off for a cooler house and lower power bill. We only have to do this for 3 months of the year.
Thanks for the question!
