Peonies Take Me Back in Time

May 10, 2010

You know how sometimes you can smell a scent and it will take you back in time to a special place?

A couple years ago a friend gave me peony plant because she knew I loved them.

This year I’ve had TWO blooms on my bush…I was so excited! It was like a Mother’s Day gift to me from God. ;o)

This flower is my all time favorite!

My grandmother has a hundred acre farm in upstate New York. Along side the horse pasture are 4-5 peony bushes. These bushes have been there for as long as I can remember (40+ years). When they are in bloom they are loaded with BEAUTIFUL flowers!!! My grandma always has a vase full of them on her kitchen table, their sweet aroma fills the room.    Whenever I smell these flowers it takes me 1100 miles north and 20 years back in time to my grandmother’s kitchen table, one of favorite places to be.

Grandma also has some pink peonies and they are breathtaking! I’m so glad she took time every year to bring some of them in the house, little did she know that she was building pleasant memories for me.

What aromas are filling your home today?

I could relate to this story. Grandpa was so proud of his huge peony bushes. When I was just a toddler, I picked a bouquet for him of peony buds. Can’t imagine his disappointment. After Grandpa died, Grandma had to sell her home. One of the first “improvements” the new ower did was dig up the peony bushes. What a sad day!
