Making the most of the snow days…
January 11, 2011

We are still snowed in here in Alabama. There is a reason why I live in the deep south and it’s not because of the ice and snow!!! But this is what the Good Lord has chosen to give us this week, along with closed roads, at least the power is still on and we have running water!
You have to remember, if and when we get snow it usually melts in a day, or less!
Looking out my front door.
It is so very quiet outside except for an occasional child laughing with delight as they play in this winter wonderland! There is no traffic or the hum of mowers or blowers, just silence. A couple of times we’ve heard 4 wheelers come by (no plows or snowmobiles here in Alabama). The Huie boys came by again today to check on us; personally I think they are teasing my husband who is STUCK at home…lol, which is torture for my hyperactive/workaholic/fireman! They were actually going to try to make it to town (15 minutes by car). You have to love the adventuresome spirit of boys/men! They were created to take dominion of their circumstances!
I’ve tried to keep the coffee and a pot of soup going. It’s amazing how being cooped up makes you eat more often! I’m thankful for gas heat, but you can still feel the chill in the air. I made some hot socks after raiding Jeff’s drawer for un-mated socks. I filled them with white rice and tied a knot. Then they are ready to be popped in the microwave for 3 minutes. You can put them on your feet, hands, lap…whatever. Place them under your quilt and it will stay warm longer. They are perfect to take to bed on these cold nights, so I made sure everyone has a couple to snuggle with, including my 86 year old grandma who is here from upstate New York!
One of the best things about homeschooling is that you make your own schedule! We do not take off for snow days, and rarely for sick days; we just work through them. The days we take off are the days that it is beautiful out, or there is a family celebration. Jeff has been home (remember the roads are closed?) , so he has been helping Emma with her math. May as well make the most of it! Yes, she is snuggling with her hot sock…you can’t do that in the government schools!
I actually cleaned out a cabinet that has not been cleaned out in several years…yay me!
I think it is a good thing to be home more, not to be distracted with always having to be somewhere, it’s amazing how much time we spend in a vehicle…and shopping! What if we just stayed home more and had less stuff to manage? What if we read more and created more? Makes me wonder if our family relationships would be stronger if we spent more time together, learning to get along? I am so grateful we homeschool, and that I have such a giving husband who loves his family. And I’m REALLY grateful he is good at math!!!

I totally agree with you about homeschooling. I am currently working right now but if God allows me tosee what go back home very soon we will be bringing our children home too.
I know to some it may sound terrible to think I am having wishful thoughts of my job coming to an end but I hope to reap the rewards of spending time with my children. They are only young once. So, we shall what God has in store for us.
Thank you for all of your posts. I love reading.
Hugs,
Angie
