Keeping Cats Out of the Garden

June 19, 2009

We have a problem with our cats doing their business in our garden, espcially the herb garden.

Here are a few ideas I have read about to keep cats out of the garden:

Plant:

garlic

geraniums

marigolds

lavender

Spread:

coffee grounds

lemon or orange peals

mothballs

Has anyone else had this problem, do any of these things work? Do you have any other ideas?

Other than that our garden is doing well, the weed war contines!

How is your garden doing? Do you have a pictures to share for our slideshow?

We will be having a Kids in the Garden Photo Contest September 30th. More details to come, so be taking some pictures as you work in your gardens.

Be sure to leave a comment at least once this month about your garden to get in on our monthly giveaway.

Go HERE for the other post in this series for tips and video clips to help you out.

  1. Hi Kathy, I have garlic, lavender, and lots of coffee grounds in my garden, but my cats still go in there…but in some ways I don’t mind, as they catch the moles and other pests that eat my stuff.

Thankfully they don’t dig around in my garden beds. I think this is because whenever I have caught on in the garden in the past, I have taken a hose to them, and given them a squirt in the rear end. After doing this diligently all summer, my own cats don’t dig around in the beds, and no one else’s cats come near my yard because my cats chase them off.

We have 2 cats we love dearly, but every spring when we plant, mulch, etc, I KNOW they think we just created giant litter boxes for them! Our solution that works wonderfully (after trying EVERYTHING) is artfully laying 6-12″ cuttings from a very thorny bush such that they can’t avoid stepping on them. They learn very fast they don’t want to go into that area. We bought 2 bushes for just that, sorry I don’t remember their name. I started with rose stem cuttings, but couldn’t get enough of them.

As for hurting their feet, we’ve been doing this over 6 years and have never had any injuries. We figure they roam everywhere and probably step on worse.

Hope that helps! Solved our problem!

Here’s my link for this week! As I near the end of this pregnancy, I’ll have to have the children doing more of the garden work, so I hope to have lots of pictures for you later this summer. We’ll be out of town again next week, so my next update won’t be until July 3rd.

I place crushed up eggshells around the plants and this seems to deter the cats, the chickens, and the slugs. I have also used the hose trick.

  6. How funny! I was just going to add my post about catnip!! ;)
    Where did Mr Linky go??

At any rate, here’s my post for the week!

I had to put a rake over one bed, aluminum foil balls in another, and eggshells all around. I think the aluminum foil balls worked the best. You’d swear that there’s not another place in all of our acreage that they can use the bathroom!

    Hello Mrs. Brodock!

Our cat, Maggie, sometimes gets in the garden. I have not caught her in the garden yet. She does not get in very often so it normally is no problem. If you use lavender, however, it does spread and is a perennial. I hope that you can stop the cats from coming in your garden!

The garden is doing well, and I have some blooms on the tomatoes and beans. I also have some pods on the peas.

Don’t Kitty love the garden as a sandbox.

    Coffee is on

Our garden is progressing nicely! I scored some FREE pepper plants at the farmers’ market last Saturday and they’ll go into containers tomorrow. Our pumpkin plants are really taking off and there are several runners. The squash never did come up.

No advice about the cats. Ours always is so grateful when dh tills so he has nice soft ground to dig in. He thinks it’s one of the ways we show him we love him. lol

    My update is posted-finally!
