Jeff’s Birthday – Family Traditions

August 29, 2011

Sunday we celebrated Jeff’s birthday with one of his favorite meals.  Steaks, oven baked fries, green beans and poppers… LOVE THOSE POPPERS!

I always plan the birthday person’s favorite meal on their birthday.

We’re not really big cake eaters so I made Jeff an ‘Eclair Cake’, which is not cake at all, I did a variation of this recipe.  He loved it…actually we’re still eating off the dessert today because we were too full from dinner yesterday!

On birthdays we go around the table to give a toast of honor to the guest of honor (in this case, the birthday boy).  Sometimes the toasts are silly and sometimes very serious, but always sincere.

It is amazing how a few words of edification really touch someone. Taking time to publicly, even if it is just at the dinner table,  to give honor to a person with your words speaks volumes not only to the recipient but to all those that are witness of it. It is a ceremonial act of love and appreciation.

This year Jeff received 2 silly, yet sweet, toasts of honor; then he received 2 that touched him deeply…very deeply. I am so thankful that we have this family tradition at our birthday celebrations!

After our feasting and toasting we gathered around for a few pictures…which almost always leads to horseplay!

Just being real…

maybe too real???

What family traditions do you have for birthdays?

Love, love, love your daughter’s expression in the photo directly below “maybe too real” — such a fun family life you must have!

We have three b-days in August PLUS our anniversary, so it’s always a super busy month. We’ve taken to celebrating all the birthdays together in what has become our big August b-day bash and usually bbq for extended family and friends — grilled chicken & brats, baked beans, mac salad, and lots of fresh fruit.

    Blessings, ~Lisa

I really enjoyed reading this! Timely, too, because just this morning I was thinking about my husband’s birthday coming up in a couple of months, pondering how to make it a special day for him. Funnily, that same eclair dessert is what he has been having for his birthday for years — before we were even together! I continue to make it for him on his birthday, and sometimes when I just want to bless him (I just made it for him a couple of days ago!). I’ll be thinking about words of affirmation (thank you for that exhortation), and how I can include our little boys (3 [almost 4), 2 1/2, and 4 months) in that.
