Just last week, my children and I camped out in our backyard and we practiced our fire building skills. We also experimented cooking over a fire. We don’t have a dutch oven, so we cooked in a pouch and then in paper bags! Very interesting. We use fire starters we make, but as my son matures, we’ll be learning how to start a fire ‘from scratch’.
We are also going to be making a simple solar oven this summer and also some ‘buddy burners’ to see how those work for cooking outdoors (and maybe, if they work, they’ll be good for emergency preparedness).

This year for Christmas, we bought Jeff a cast iron dutch oven. He seems a bit slow in wanting to try to use it.
I guess he just needs to do it……maybe then he will fall in love with it like you did with yours!
Any suggestions on what to try first for instant success?

Interesting post considering we just gave our 12yr son a dutch oven as a bday gift a few days ago. There are loads of great recipes and resources about them on the internet if you google ‘dutch oven cooking’ or some such thing. We are trying to do more and more practical gift giving and thought this would be a great gift that if practiced now could come in handy when my son has his own children . Hard to ruin a dutch oven!
We bought him a bag ar briquets to practice with and then when we go camping later this month he can have some idea of what he wants to try in the campfire.
