From Seeds to Harvest- Raised Beds and Soil

For those that have poor soil or limited space raised beds, sometimes called square foot gardening, is an excellent way to garden. We use some raised beds.

You can go to your local lumber store and ask for their cull lumber pile. This is usually boards that are not in the best shape, but they are perfect for raised beds, usually at a fraction of the cost!

You can also check places that sell bagged soil (Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc) and ask if they have any ripped bags. These are usually sold at less than half price, we keep an eye out for these year round!!! Whether you are trying to fill a raised bed or some large pots, this is a great way to get some quality soil.

Here are just a few sites that discuss raised beds, you can Google for more:

Your library will have several books on square foot gardening too.
