Do you know of a good sewing machine, heavy enough for a denim hem, but  less  than $200 or $100?

Hi Donna,

The key to working with denim is using a big enough needle. Wal Mart sells universal denim needles. If you use a normal size needle it will probably break. You may also need to adjust your tension and stitch length to relieve the ‘pressure’ on your machine. See your owner’s guide for this.

As for a cheaper machine, a Brother or Singer from Wal Mart works fine. You can also check with fabric shops in your area for trade-ins on machines. And then there is amazon that will have good used machines.

I hope this helps!

You can also get a nifty little notion that helps you ease over the bulk of denim seams as you hem. Mine is called a hump jumper; it helps ease things along so that the needle doesn’t break and the feed-dog feeds more evenly. There is also one out there called jean-a-ma-jig.
I think that the biggest problem with sewing denim or bulky fabric is trying to sew too fast. As you said, just knowing your machine and how to adjust the feed pressure are a big part of it.
