Free Educational Opportunities ~ More Life Skills

September 20, 2008

Today I am enjoying the fruit of having older children, although I'd GLADLY accept any little ones God would send my way. Jeff is working, the girls are gone and I am enjoying a quiet day, cooking and cleaning…all the windows are open with a fall breeze coming through…life is good!

Olivia and Emma have gone to a Goat Workshop. No, we don't have any goats and we don't live where we can have goats, but it is still something good for them to learn about. This workshop is put on by our county Cooperative Extension. They'll cover farming goats, milking them and making goats' milk soap. Maybe someday our dream of living in the country will come true and they can put their knowledge to good use! ;o)

Last week the girls joined the Shooting Sports Club. Again, this is sponsored by our Cooperative Extension. The girls just loved it and Olivia was even interviewed by a local reporter as to why she was interested in a shooting club; she relied, "To help protect my second amendment right!" Which those of you that know Olivia know that answer was no surprise. :o )  They then had a nice long conversation.

We have been active in 4-H for 6 or 7 years. 4-H and the Cooperative Extension provide so many opportunities in areas we need to know about for little or no cost. The best thing is you can do as little as you want or as much as you want. Even though Olivia has graduated she can still participate until she is 19.

So you may want to call or stop your county Extension and see what programs are being offered this year. Even if it is something they may not necessarily  use right now, such as goat farming, it could be skills they will use later in life.

Just a few things we have done through 4-H and the Cooperative Extension:

Public Speaking (this we have been most active in)

Food Demonstrations

Woodworking

Quilting

Canning

Dairy and Steer Judging

Goat Workshop

Shooting Sports

Leadership Training

Community Service Programs

County Fair Exhibits
