Nothing discourages sewing like having issues with your machine. Do yourself and children a favor and learn how your machine works and make adjustments. Know how to use the different stitches.

If you go on the Home Shopping network (HSN.com) you can see videos describing and performing features of different machines. (Beware of greed and impulse buying
Sometimes HSN has best prices because of bulk buying, specials and often free shipping, too. But you do have to comparison shop.
