Farmers Market

June 12, 2009

Because of where we live, the BEAUTIFUL and FERTILE state of Alabama, there are farmer’s markets and corner vegetable stands everywhere! I love being able to buy from local farmers, just as I posted about where we buy eggs. It is good to keep the money in the community, not to mention that produce is at it’s freshest!!!

I like to wait until produce is at it’s peak, then buy large quantities to can or freeze. Because there are so many farmers and gardeners around here it is very likely people will offer you a ‘mess’ (a southern term) of what they have in abundance at the time for free or at a low price, which is great, but you have to get it and get it preserved! :o )

You can check for local farmer’s market and you pick farms HERE. You can also call your local Cooperative Extension.

Here is a good article about Spending Wisely at the Farmers Market.

    Hello Mrs. Brodock!

My garden is doing well. I am trying to get rid of some early blight on my tomato plants. I posted some pictures of my garden if you would like to use them in the slide show.

Here is my link for this week:

Feel free to use any of our photos! I have trouble getting photos with the kids in them since I’m usually helping THEM and have no hands to shoot with! ;) They are starting to help with the watering and will gladly help with the harvesting I’m sure.

Our garden is doing great. Lots of little flowers on all of our plants, and baby tomatoes and peppers as well.

A friend of mine makes her own homemade goats’ milk soap and sells it at the local farmer’s market. I’m going to be helping her this summer starting tomorrow. Can’t wait!

As far as our garden grows, our tomatoes have small fruits on them and we’re hoping to be enjoying BLTs as soon as they change color. We’ve harvested lettuce twice. I planted some basil but it’s not growing so fast. Not sure why. Any ideas, Olivia???

    Blessings–

I posted about my girls’ gardens. So, my post isn’t so much an update on our garden but it has pics of the girls in their gardens at last.

Kendra and Vannan have been so excited about all the nice vegetables growing. I’ve also heard that they planted some potatoes somewhere.
