Crocheting with Plastic Bags
April 24, 2010
Several years ago I saw a tote bag that was crocheted with plastic bags, it was SO COOL! My first thought was that it would be perfect for a beach bag because it could withstand getting wet and just shake it out if it got sand in it. It’s one of those projects that I keep saying I’m going to do, and now after looking at THIS website, I’ve just got to do to it!!! I’ll bet they work up fast because of the size of the hook (and bags) and that any pattern usable with yarn would work for plastic.
Here is a clip on how to cut the bags:

I like the way she showed in the link how to do the bags by cutting the loops. It makes the plarn (plastic yarn) a lot stronger and makes it really easy to add on if you didnt put enough on your ball to begin with. My daughter also makes thin bracelets by braiding plastic strips from our bread bags and coconut bags etc into bracelets. They look neat worn in multiples.
I love this idea. I might see if I can get my daughter to figure this out and make me some. Thanks for sharing.
I have tried this and just wanted to mention that if you cut it to 1/2 inch rather than an inch you will have a different look to the plarn and be able to use a smaller hook. I did mine with the bigger hoot & wider plastic and it created a very different look than my 16yr dd who did a smaller version. Booth looked good but different style to it.
Thank you for sharing that Diana! I’m gathering my plastic bags and can’t wait to give it a try.
There is a lovely blog dedicated to crochet projects using recycled bags:
