Answering Those Questions About Raising BOYS!!!

January 25, 2010

I am amazed at all of the questions and comments that all of you have had concerning how to raise real men.

I think moms worry most about “what to do”.  While we were raising our son I was always worried about one thing or another with him, what-if, what-if, what-if. My husband on the other hand was always telling me everything was going to be OK. lol… Our son did have some issues (EVERYONE does) as he got older; but in the end we do our very best to raise them and then it is between them and God. THAT is why it is so important to teach them what God expects from them (and us). At times I will sit back and say, “If we’d only done this or that differently.” We all have regrets, we all learn and grow and we all need to remember that God is God we are not! He is in control of the heart, He can redeem for lost time and He is most definitely strong where we are weak! The important thing is that we stay completely dependent on HIM!

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes:

but he who seeks counsel is wise.

Proverbs 12:15

Most of us have not been raised by God fearing parents and we have been taught the world’s wisdom, which leads to destruction; just look at the divorce rate in our country, not to mention the thousands of abortions EVERYDAY!

“…there is safety  multitude of counselors.”

Proverbs 11:14

When getting advice from anyone:

Be sure that their advice is based on God’s word, it is the only truth!

Be sure there is fruit in that person’s life. Don’t take advice from a person who may quote a verse here and there and then lives the opposite.

Remember that every family is different, each child is different. Although the truths in God’s word are unchangeable, how to apply commands and principles takes a LOT of discernment, that is why it helps to have that multitude of counselors.

I do want to try to answer some of your questions, and Melanie Young is going to answer some. I am in the process of getting a some ladies I know, that have good fruit in their lives, who have raised or are raising boys to answer questions too. It will probably take a couple weeks to work through the questions left in the comment section.

Again, THANK YOU, for all your input and let’s see if we can’t learn some new things in helping our sons become strong gentlemen who walk the paths of righteousness!

One of my dearest friends (who has 4 boys) said to me just a few days ago, “Do you have any idea how many hours a day I spend just on training?” We both kind of chuckled. Her boys ages 14-3, are all VERY well behaved, kind, considerate and always looking out for the needs of others.  Do they have issues? SURE! But she and her husband work at it DAILY!

You only have about 16-18 years to equip them, to root them in Truth! That sounds like a long time, but it flies by in a flash!!!  And if we as parents are not diligent in our responsibilities, we will spend the second half of our life filled with regret and heartache as we watch our adult children wander on the broad path, trying to figure it out on their own; which will reflect in their marriages, their jobs and their children——— except for the grace of God!

Let us not become weary in doing good,

for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9
