Anniversaries and Quilts

March 17, 2010

This summer my in-laws will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They have 4 children, one of which is my husband Jeff.  We are all busy making plans for a surprise  party for them. It’s kind of hard for Jeff and me because we live 1100 miles away, but we’re doing the best we can via phone calls and emails. :o )

One thing I want to make them is a quilt. I’ve been surfing blogs and websites to find just the right pattern. A quilt is a gift that that can comfort bodies and warm hearts. A well made quilt can be passed down for generations. Can you imagine you and your husband laying under a quilt that your much loved grandparents laid under?

Few things are made to last and be passed on these days. Most things are made as cheaply as possible because they are disposable, just as many relationships are disposable. Attending a 50th wedding anniversary party is becoming more and more rare in our culture of high divorce rates. I hope our children appreciate the commitment that their grandparents have made to each other; their marriage has been quilted together tightly and has stood the test of time.

So I’m searching for a pattern and fabric that will reflect both of Jeff’s parents in one quilt. I’ll let you know what I find.

    Looking forward to seeing it!
I agree with you about quilts.

One of the biggest treasures I have is a quilt my my great grandmother, my grandmother, and her sisters hand stitched. It is a prairie girl pattern and I hope I can pass it down to my boys’ wives so that they can give it to their children.

I have a quilt that my great-grandmother made for my grandmother when she got married in 1939. Sadly, my grandmother passed away on March 5th at the age of 88. I’m so thankful she gave me that quilt back in the 1980s. I never met her mother. She died when I was a newborn.

I think that your photo quilts would be perfect for this occasion!

I’m thinking of making a Tossed 9 Patch sometime this year. I like the supposed randomness of it.

Can’t wait to see what you make!

    Blessings–
    Dana
