A Great Family Movie
May 8, 2009
Last night we watched The Astronaut Farmer, from Netflix. It does have a little language in it, but overall it is a great family movie. I love how the wife stood by her husband and the kids were so supportive. Yes, the story line is fiction, but that’s OK! They encouraged Dad to follow his dream. There was no, "Your nuts!" from the kids towards the parents which is what you see in most family movies. To be honest I hate most family movies, almost all the time the kids disrespect the parents, the kids have all the answers and in the end the parents end up admitting how wrong they were. Sneaking around and lying is rewarded. And THAT is suppose to build families up? ugh!
Anyway…
There were several good quotes in this movie. I love the part where the father takes his children out of school so they can be by his side as he lives out his dream and they can experience REAL LIFE science and history. It was GREAT!
The father says to the upset history teacher as he is pulling his kids out of school, "Excuse me Mam, you are teaching them how to READ history, I’m going to teach them how to MAKE history!"
That sums up alot of my attitude about homeschooling!

I am so glad you posted a review on this movie. I recently saw it in the video store, but didn’t borrow it (we get free use of the movies because one of our children works there – I’m too cheep to actually pay for a video rental) because I had not heard anything about it.
It looks like I’ll have a movie to watch during my down time this weekend.
Thanks,
Mrs.B
Thank you for the two good movie reviews. We are just discovering the benefits of a Netfix subscription as an alternative to cable and movie rentals for movie night. I will look for the two movies you have mentioned and add them to my queue.
I would like to offer a title for you to consider…especially since it seems you enjoy period costumes (your 1860′s dance? Sounds like fun!) One day I was laid up with a migraine and I watched all four episodes of Wives and Daughters, a BBC production of Elisabeth Gaskill’s novel (horrifying, I know, but there wasn’t much else I was capable of doing). It was an utterly charming production and I was never disappointed.
The movie shows the blessing of a kind, obedient spirit, even in the face of changes and circumstances beyond your control. It is about a village doctor’s daughter whose father remarries years after her mother’s death. The young lady loses her place a lady of the house and also gains a sister…neither of those is necessarily a good thing. She has many difficulties to face, but manages to keep her sincerity and values intact. Her gentle (but determined) nature and sweet smile are garments she wears daily, but they never seem overly forced or fake, at least not to me. Her character also demonstrates the benefits of holding one’s tongue and not saying everything that entered her head. What an important lesson for us all to learn!
The storyline enchanted me and made the hours pass more quickly…and I never had to worry that any of my children (who were in and out to help me) would walk in and see something bad. Well, mostly, anyway. There might have been one or two expletives somewhere in the eight hours of episodes (whatever might have been shocking in the 1800′s), but not something that was overly upsetting.
Thanks again for your suggestions. I look forward to seeing more good ones in the future!
OH YES! We love Wives and Daughters! Olivia is a huge fan of BBC movies. Thanks for posting such a good review of it!
We recently watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers from Netflix. The boys were just as engaged as the little girl. We LOVED it! Thanks for your recommendation and for your incredible website. May God bless you in all of your efforts!
