50th Wedding Anniversary Cake and a Faster than the Speed of Light Vacation!

July 15, 2010

Last week we were in upstate New York for Jeff’s parent’s 50th anniversary. I offered to make the cake. Have you ever watched The Cake Boss on TV? I’ve only seen it a few times and love the cakes, but hate all the drama that goes with it. Well… I ended up with my own Cake Boss drama. I’ll spare you all the details (and I had NO time to take pictures of the first part of the cake that ended up in the TRASH just 4 hours before the party!), just let me say, it is always good to have a plan B, C and D! :) I ended up salvaging this cake with a whipped cream icing, rather than the buttercream. I was also VERY, VERY thankful that I could count on my daughters to bake 2 layers of cake and dump them without cracks at a moments notice (at a different location and none of MY supervision); they worked well under pressure! Catering is NOT for the thin skinned!!!

The girls and their cousin made the flower arrangements.

It was fun to work with Jeff’s brothers and sister along with their spouses in preparation for the party. Because we live so far away from them and we only see them once every year or two it is hard to have close relationships; this was a great way to bond.

Our trip not only included the anniversary party, but also a family reunion on my side of the family…

a couple of trips to Sylvan Beach which has a great little amusement park…

and ICE CREAM…

then bowling…

And my favorite part…spending time with my grandmother on her farm.

Time with her this trip was brief, but she’ll be at MY HOUSE in a few months!!!

Jeff even spent some time helping get some of Grandma’s hay in the barn… yes, it was after dark and SO VERY HOT!!!

After 7 days of working, partying, swimming and visiting we drove 19 hours straight home. As soon as we got home Olivia had to go back to her responsibilities as the governess and Emma left to go help a family that livesĀ  near by for the next 3 weeks… and THAT my dear friends is why this blog has been so quiet! :) Did I mention that I had next to no cell service nor internet access almost the whole trip? I think that was the hardest part of the trip. ;o)
