2008 County Fair Report
September 22, 2008
Yesterday, the girls went and picked up all their entrees form the county fair. Participating in the county fair is a family tradition for us.

For the past 4 years the girls have entered an individual 4-H booth exhibit. Olivia has taken home first place 2 years in a row. Not only do they need to build their exhibit, but they have to research the information and be creative in their display. All topics have to relate to youth and 4-H somehow. This year Olivia's booth exhibit was about herbs.

Emma's was about the community service project their club did for the Ronald McDonald House. She received second place! Emma entered several craft items and baked goods. She received: 4 blue ribbons, 5 red ribbons and 3 yellow ribbons and a total of $117 in prize money.

Olivia entered several items: quilts, a flower arrangement, herbs, and baked goods. She was excited to win a blue ribbon for this quilt she made. She also received a yellow ribbon on another quilt she did. She received: 7 blue ribbons, 8 red ribbons and 4 yellow ribbons and a total of $140.
I won a blue ribbon on my Sweet Pepper Relish and a red on my canned blueberries!
When we make things for the fair we try to make sure it is something we can give as a gift later.
We love this part of the fair, we always come home with new ideas. We also see lots of people we normally don't see. The down side is the culture shock of the rides and games at night. It's a rough crowd, the music is rough, the 'prizes' of sculls and cross bones, posters, etc… are rough, teens looking for other teens are not the best part of the fair. The carnival (rides and games) workers are really rough. On one I feel sorry for them and on the other hand they don't have to live that way.Too bad we don't live in an ideal world where all is lovely and beautiful. ;o) So we go into the world, taking part in the good things!

Congratulations and way to go girls! The work is beautiful and I’m sure the memories you made preparing for the fair are wonderful.
Linked here from today’s post (8/25/09). Since I am a newer home-schooler I hadn’t thought about this so I didn’t get my kids in the one this year in Indiana. But this is so inspiring! I am hoping to jump in on next year’s project!
By the way…. your girls amaze me!
