Teaching Good Things, Practical Skills for Real Life

Equipping Families with Practical Skills for Real Life!

1 Thing that REALLY Ticks Me Off!

I hear it all the time, although not in my house because I can fix it in a heartbeat, but I hear it from the young and the not-so-young and it REALLY ticks me off.

“I’m bored…”

It’s bad enough to hear this from a child who is on summer break and is used to having most of his day all planned out for him; but to hear this from teens, or even worse, grown adults just sends me over the edge.

People who complain about being bored don’t understand their purpose here on earth. They are deceived into believing that it is all about them and that they are to be entertained. They don’t understand that they are here to do, to pour out for others, not constantly be poured into.

Parents, we’ve got to be alert to this lazy and selfish attitude in our kids when they are young. Never allow them to say they are bored! They must learn how to occupy themselves with meaningful work and enjoyable play.

I am not saying there should not be time to be still for rest and reflection, we all need that.  What I am saying is people, young and old, who cannot find purpose to each day are missing out on the whole WHY of life!

The first question of the Westminster Catechism is:

Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

And I love how this is stated in the The Heidelberg Catechism

Question 1. What is thy only comfort in life and death?

Answer: That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied for all my sins,  and delivered me from all the power of the devil;  and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head;  yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life,  and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.

Note the first part and last part. It is because we belong to God we need to be willing and ready to live for Him.

Ready to work!

Ready to serve!

People who complain about being bored are snubbing their nose at God, they are rejecting His design and His commands.

There is so much to learn and do! None of us truly graduate, there is always more to learn, whether it be book knowledge or hands on skills.

There are so many needy people around us that just need someone to care, someone to help them.

There are so many ways to create, whether it be items, music, art, a home, etc…

There are so many ways to generate income, to become more self-sufficient!

No one should ever say they are bored… NO ONE!

Titus 2:3 says that we are to be "...teachers of good things...". We believe that part of these good things are practical skills that we all need in every day life to care for our family and neighbors. One of our primary responsibilities as parents is equip our children with the skills and tools to one day be productive, well rounded adults. Children need to be exposed to many different areas of work. Not only should they know how to work, but they should want to work. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us- yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17
